Is your child having difficulty or becoming frustrated with:
- Holding their pencil correctly
- Sitting properly at the table
- Copying shapes
- Forming letters and numbers correctly
- Writing words and sentences neatly, with consistent letter zoning of the ascenders and descenders, spacing and letter sizing
- Organising their work on the page
- Joining their letters correctly to form cursive writing
The O.T. Practice has developed a six-week programme that will be individually tailored to meet the specific needs of your child. We work with children aged between 4–11 years (school years - Reception to Year 6)
Let our therapists work on a one-to-one basis within your home, or child’s school, targeting underlying core skills to help your child develop their handwriting.
Teachers and parents are involved from the start through our parent and school questionnaires. We will then visit your child at home to establish their difficulties through observation, discussion and standardised assessments. This ensures that the handwriting package is the best way forward for your child and allows them to become familiar with their therapist prior to the start of the sessions.
By setting small and measurable goals we aim to help develop:
- A mature pencil grip
- Assuming and maintaining an effective sitting posture
- Correct letter formation
- Development of pre-writing and copying skills
- Activities to increase core and shoulder stability
- Fine motor, hand strength and dexterity
- Organisation of work on the page
We use a variety of approaches including multi-sensory strategies, and incorporate the Handwriting Without Tears® programme. This is an effective programme that aims to develop legible and fluent handwriting.
At the end of the six sessions your therapist will create a personalised ‘write away’ feedback report detailing your child’s progress and providing you with a programme of suggested activities to continue to move forward with their handwriting skills.
If needed our therapist will choose and provide the most appropriate pencil grip for your child; there is no additional charge for this.
