Vocational rehabilitation

Vocational rehabilitation can be defined as whatever helps someone with a health problem to stay at, return to and remain in work. Our nationwide team of vocational rehabilitation experts can provide a comprehensive vocational rehabilitation service through assessment, advice and treatment, whether it be a simple work station assessment to reduce postural strain or a more complex return to work programme.

What is vocational rehabilitation?

Occupational Therapists are specialists in assessing, treating and rehabilitating individuals with a disability, illness or injury. Our aim is to increase the individual’s independence and function in the worker role through a holistic and client centred approach whilst encompassing the individual’s physical, psychological and social needs.

The OT Practice accepts vocational rehabilitation referrals from a variety of sources including employers or employees directly, HR deparments, insurers and solicitors. We offer a wide range of interventions for individuals with a disability, health condition or impairment enabling them to overcome barriers to work.

Our approach

We aim to provide impartial, timely and practical advice to facilitate a return to or remaining at work. Our collaborative approach involves working with all parties to ensure we provide cost effective and sustainable solutions.

Why use The OT Practice to provide vocational rehabilitation?

  • We provide advice from the moment you first call us. Our vocational rehabilitation enquiries are answered by a member of our client management team who will be able to provide relevant information about our service, answer any questions you may have and provide guidance on next steps.
  • Using us allows rapid access to expert occupational therapy vocational rehabilitation advice not available through the NHS or Social Services.
  • We have a nationwide team of expert vocational rehabilitation occupational therapists and will select the best therapist based on location and circumstances.
  • Our variety of packages of care mean that we can work in differnt ways depending on the individual circumstances and resources available.
  • We provide an all inclusive cost to ensure that our services are fully transparent from the start.

Vocational assessment & advice

A vocational assessment is likely to include:

  • A previous job review
  • Assessment of current level of function in relation to previous and/or prospective future roles
  • Comprehensive report and recommendations for enabling the employee to return to a previous role, or identifying suitable new roles.

Work site assessment

An on-site assessment focuses on three main areas:

  • the job role
  • the working environment
  • the employer's and employees views.

This enables the therapist to gain an accurate picture of the work 'tasks' involved, the demands on the individual in their job role and any barriers in the workplace environment preventing them managing this.

Return to work plans

A return to work plan is drawn up and agreed by all parties involved in the individual’s rehabilitation. It confirms timescales, actions and responsibilities incorporating fixed review points to monitor the progress and outcomes of the individual.

The return to work plan typically incorporates staged or phased return to work for individuals to facilitate a smooth transition back into the workplace.

Return to work telephone assessment

In addition to our more comprehensive vocational rehabilitation assessments, we are able to provide simple telephonic assessments with an employee at a pre-agreed date and time.

In these assessments the therapist goes through a structured set of questions and analyses the results to provide a clinically reasoned report and recommendations.

Commonly asked questions about our vocational rehabilitation service

Questions about vocational rehabilitation for employers

How can The OT Practice help us support an employee?

With your employee’s consent, we can assist by providing vocational support to you and your employee.

Depending on the reason for the referral, a functional assessment with your employee will highlight what difficulties they are experiencing and how we can help.

There are many possible outcomes following the assessment, some examples of our recommendations could include:

  • A graded return to work plan.
  • Work station and environmental adjustments.
  • Role alterations.
  • A structured working pattern.

All options would be presented to you in a report following the assessment with the cost implications clearly hghlighted. This allows you and your emplyee to decide on the most appropriate next step.
